What Is Family Counselling?
Family Counselling looks at your family as a whole rather than pointing to one person as “the problem.” Your therapist pays close attention to how you talk to each other, the patterns you keep falling into, and the roles everyone tends to play at home, then works with you to build something that feels more connected.
Sessions can include parents, kids, siblings, or extended family, whatever combination fits where your family is right now. Most families who come to us aren’t looking to figure out who’s at fault. They just want to feel like a team again.
Who Can Family Counselling Help?
We’ve sat with parents and kids stuck in the same argument on repeat, siblings who used to be close and now barely speak, and blended families still finding their footing with new routines and new people in the house. We’ve supported families through a divorce, an illness, or a loss, and parents and teens working out how much independence feels right for everyone. Sometimes it’s a family adjusting to one member’s anxiety, depression, ADHD, or another struggle that’s started to affect the whole house, and sometimes it’s grandparents, aunts, or uncles trying to understand each other across generations.
If any of that sounds familiar, you’re far from the only family dealing with it, and you don’t have to sort it out by yourselves.

What Family Counselling Can Help With
A lot of families come to us because the same argument keeps happening no matter how many times you’ve tried to talk it through. Others come because a parent and child have drifted, and conversations turn into conflict or silence before they get anywhere. We see a lot of families working specifically on communication, learning how to actually hear each other instead of just waiting for a turn to speak.
Then there are the bigger moments: a divorce or separation, a new baby, a move, remarriage, or a loved one’s illness. Grief shows up differently for everyone in a family, and it helps to have support figuring out how to carry it together instead of everyone carrying it alone. And sometimes it’s about one person, a child, teen, or adult, managing anxiety, depression, ADHD, or something else, while everyone around them tries to figure out how to help without losing themselves in the process.
What Sessions Can Look Like
There’s no single format here. Some weeks it might be your whole family in the room together. Other times, your therapist might meet with just you and your child, a couple of siblings, or check in one-on-one before bringing everyone back together.
Sessions usually mix real conversation with guided tools and exercises to help things feel less stuck. For younger kids, your therapist might bring in play or art since sitting and talking it through isn’t always realistic for a seven-year-old. For teens and adults, sessions often focus on practical things: disagreeing without it turning into a blowout, setting a boundary that actually holds, saying the hard thing out loud.
Your therapist will move at whatever pace feels right for your family. This isn’t about rushing toward a fix.

Family Counselling vs. Couples/Relationship Counselling
People ask us this a lot, and it’s an easy thing to mix up. Relationship counselling is about the two of you: your communication, trust, and connection as partners.
Family Counselling opens that up. It might include your kids, your co-parent, siblings, or other family members, and looks at how everyone in the house affects, and is affected by, everyone else. A couple working through tension might bring their kids into family counselling if that conflict is spilling onto the rest of the family, while relationship counselling stays focused on just the two of them.
Both kinds of counselling care about communication and connection. The real difference comes down to who’s in the room, and whose relationships you’re working on.
