TMJ Therapy with Shannon Primmer, RMT

Jaw pain can be frustrating, exhausting, and disruptive to your everyday life. If you’re dealing with headaches, tension, or discomfort that never seems to fully resolve, TMJ-related concerns may be part of what’s going on. At Stone Silo, we offer TMJ therapy focused on massage as part of our physical wellness services, with care that looks beyond the jaw itself.

Shannon Primmer provides TMJ therapy primarily in our Listowel location and also sees clients in Waterloo. Her work is grounded, attentive, and centred on understanding how your whole body is contributing to what you’re experiencing.

What Is TMJ?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint or the surrounding muscles become irritated, overworked, or restricted, it can lead to a wide range of symptoms that affect far more than just your jaw.

TMJ concerns often build over time and are frequently connected to posture, muscle tension, stress, and how the body holds emotion. For many people, relief doesn’t come from treating the jaw alone, but from understanding how the rest of the body is involved.

Common TMJ Symptoms

TMJ-related discomfort can show up in different ways, including:

  • Headaches or pain behind the eyes
  • Earaches or ringing in the ears
  • Clenching or grinding of teeth
  • Neck, shoulder, and upper back pain
  • A dull or aching sensation in the face
  • Clicking, popping, or locking in the jaw

If several of these sound familiar, you’re not alone, and support is available.

What Can Cause TMJ Issues?

TMJ concerns rarely come from a single source. Some common contributing factors include:

  • Trauma or injury
  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching
  • Injury to the jaw muscles or joint
  • Forward head posture
  • Movement or irritation of the soft cushion within the jaw joint
  • Chronic stress
  • Suppressed or unexpressed emotions

Understanding what’s driving your symptoms is an important part of creating lasting change.

How We Approach TMJ Therapy

Shannon takes a full-body approach to TMJ treatment. While the jaw is an important focus, it’s rarely the only area involved. Tension in the neck, shoulders, and even the hips can contribute to ongoing jaw issues.

In your sessions, we look at how different parts of your body are working together. By addressing restrictions and patterns elsewhere, we aim to reduce the likelihood of the same TMJ symptoms continuing to return. This approach is about supporting the whole system, not just chasing individual symptoms.

Treatment is adapted to you, your comfort level, and what your body is telling us on that day.

TMJ Therapy and
Dental Care

TMJ massage can also be a helpful complement to dental care. For clients experiencing persistent jaw clicking, popping, or muscle tension, massage therapy may help reduce strain in the surrounding muscles and support greater comfort between dental visits.
