Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is a widely used evidence-based therapeutic approach that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. CBT aims to identify and modify negative or unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours to improve emotional well-being and promote positive change.

  • CBT works by helping individuals recognize and challenge negative or “distorted” thoughts and beliefs that contribute to emotional distress. Through therapy sessions, individuals learn to identify patterns of thinking and then work with the therapist to develop strategies and skills to challenge those thoughts, and ultimately replace unhelpful thoughts and behaviours with healthier and more accurate thoughts.

  • CBT has been found effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, phobias, and substance abuse. It is also beneficial for managing stress, improving relationships, and enhancing overall well-being.

  • The duration of CBT treatment can vary depending on several factors, including the individual's specific needs and the nature of the problem being addressed. The treatment length is determined collaboratively between the individual and the therapist.

  • CBT is a versatile therapy that can be adapted to various age groups, including children, adolescents, and adults. While it is effective for many people, it may not be the best approach for everyone or every situation. A qualified mental health professional can assess whether CBT is suitable based on an individual's specific needs and circumstances, and may recommend alternative therapies or approaches if necessary.
